Sir John Soane's Museum: London's Hidden House of Wonders
Sir John Soane's Museum is the former Holborn home of the neoclassical architect Sir John Soane, kept almost exactly as he arranged it: a labyrinth of antiquities, paintings, mirrors and hidden picture rooms. Entry is free, and it remains one of the most extraordinary house museums in the world.

What is Sir John Soane's Museum
Sir John Soane's Museum is a house museum beside Lincoln's Inn Fields in Holborn, the former home of the neoclassical architect John Soane, who designed the Bank of England. Over many years he filled it with paintings, sculptures, drawings and antiquities, turning his private rooms into a study collection for architecture and art.
The museum was established by a private Act of Parliament during Soane's lifetime, taking effect on his death in 1837. The Act required that the house and collections be preserved as nearly as possible exactly as they were at his death, which is why the interiors still feel so intensely personal and unchanged today.
What to see inside the Soane Museum
Soane was a master of light and space, and the house is a puzzle of top-lit domes, coloured glass, mirrors and rooms that fold open to reveal more pictures behind. The picture room, with its hinged planes, holds far more works than its walls should physically allow.
The collection includes paintings by Canaletto, Hogarth, Turner and others, alongside Greek, Roman and Egyptian antiquities. Its most famous object is the alabaster Sarcophagus of Seti I, an Egyptian treasure more than 3,000 years old, displayed deep in the heart of the house among Soane's crowded arrangement of fragments and casts.
Why it stays a hidden gem
Despite sitting in central London, Sir John Soane's Museum is easy to walk straight past, a row of townhouses on a quiet square rather than a grand civic building. Only a limited number of visitors are allowed in at a time, which keeps it calm and protects the fragile interiors.
Because it is free and modest from the street, many travellers never realise what lies inside. Step in and you find one of London's most surprising experiences, a complete world built by one man and frozen at the moment he left it.
Know before you go
- Entry is free, but the museum admits only a small number of visitors at a time, so arrive early.
- It is closed Mondays and usually open Wednesday to Sunday, so plan your day around that.
- Take your time with the picture room and look up to enjoy Soane's clever use of light.
